In the early
1900s, Bisbee Arizona was considered the true wild, wild
west. There were saloons all along the downtown streets, gunfights,
gambling and just general hell-raising. The surrounding land was host
to Geronimo, Cochise, Pancho Villa and Lee Marvin (He came later).
In 1910 the city was considered the largest in the territory, with
over 25,000 people. The Cochise County seat was relocated here from
Tombstone in 1929.
People came here and found jobs, becoming miners and railroad workers
and their children were enrolled in school. In June of 1917, John
R. Kibbey Architects working out of Phoenix Arizona completed the
plans and drawings for an elementary school, which was built and opened
in 1918 as Garfield School. There were now 15 schools strategically
placed at ½ mile intervals throughout Bisbee so that children
would not have a long walk to get an education.
Even now as the School House Inn, the same sturdy red brick construction
stands tall and regal, with 8,110 sq. ft. of floor space. In the bottom
floor of this two-story icon still remains the original steam heat
furnace (it has long since been disabled), but due to its shear weight
and size, cannot be removed.

At the east end of the School
House Inn stands a dynamic giant oak tree. In the early 1900s
it was just a back yard variety live oak, but has grown to mammoth
proportions towering higher than the rooftop and spreading its
branches to shade the large patio. |
The School House Inn Bed & Breakfast name was
the creation of Mark & Shirl Negus, who acquired the property
about fifteen years ago, and ran the business for around five years.
Prior to that, this inn was named the Petra Bed & Breakfast. Mark
did a lot of structural improvements and repairs to help preserve
the integrity of the original building.
This is a fun bed & breakfast. Even our senior guests get the
giggles while browsing the hallways & rooms remembering the good
old days. How about the boys who would dunk the girls
long hair in the inkwell on the desks; that memory is in the greeting
room downstairs!!
Bisbee's wonderful mile-high climate provides you with outdoor enjoyment
year-round. Directly below the Inn, Garfield Park provides basketball,
volleyball, and swings for your enjoyment (youre never too old
to be a swing champion).
Finally, don't forget to make your reservations early and spend some
time exploring Old Bisbee. See you real soon. |
